Play from a Language Development Perspective

Language acquisition, which begins at an early age by hearing and imitating sounds, has been supported by numerous studies demonstrating the impact of play. Even infants, whose babbling can be considered a form of play, begin to actively use sounds and verbal elements as play materials.

Playing dramatic and symbolic games, especially from an early age, helps children recognize sounds and intonations and develop their ability to use them. Rhythmic and harmonious children's literature products, such as children's songs, rhymes, counting games, finger games, and poems, make significant contributions to expressive and receptive language skills.

Because children interact intensively with both the language elements in the game and those used by the players, they learn new words and develop their ability to perceive and convey various messages. New words learned during dramatic play enrich their vocabulary. Children with a developed vocabulary express themselves better, which helps strengthen their communication skills and positively affects their self-confidence and social success.
